The owner's manual is not much assistance with the procedure you are trying to follow.

My often repeated suggestion is that you should go to your local library and ask them to bring in a Suzuki Savage Manual - either the Suzuki or the Clymer will do - and then borrow the book and study and make the necessary notes to follow the procedure you are trying - but with the background of having read through the details of what has to be done.

Getting to the spark plug is a bit tedious because as you have learned it is necessary to remove the seat, the tank and a cover on the left hand top of the engine - then the plug needs the long tube spark plug wrench in your tool kit. Try to clean all the grit and grunge out from around the spark plug before you remove it - and have the new plug immediately handy so that you can install it ASAP to keep grit and grunge out of your engine.

I rather suspect that you will find the problem is not the plug. However, changing the plug is a good idea if you have no idea when it was last changed.

Your 1986 does not have the side stand cut off switch I don't believe - does it have the cut off switch on the handlebars? Is that on? Does your bike have the clutch cut out switch ?( you have to pull the clutch before the engine will start).

It sounds to me like you have some sort of wiring or fuse problem but I am sure others will jump in with alternate and more directive suggestions.

My advice though is get to the library post haste and get your hands on that service manual - then you can "learn" the wrenching our beloved steeds require.

Keep the rubber side down
